Shefford Herefords

The Shefford Hereford cattle herd was formed in 1992 with purchases made from the late Major Michel Symonds who founded his Llandinabo herd in 1947. The stock at Llandinabo is based on females that were purchased from most of the famous herds in Herefordshire principally Free Town, The Vern, The Haven, and Tarrington.

The Shefford herd is based entirely on animals whose ancestors were registered in the British Studbook (1846 to the present day) and the policy of using only known and proven British bloodlines has been maintained. Its ability to produce high yields of meat off poor quality forage has made it the cornerstone of the beef industry of all the cattle raising countries of the world.

We are striving to breed Herefords that provide consistency in size, conformation, breed type, temperament and reproduction. They look good, behave well and are a credit to the three hundred years of dedicated improvement by breeders from Hereford and throughout rest of the UK.

Over the past few years we have introduced new blood to the original Llandinabo lines using an excellent Albany stock bull, Albany Skipper, bred by Leslie Cooke. He was a pleasure to have in the herd and impeccably behaved ensuring in his own way that every one of his cows was in calf. In 2004 we used Llandinabo Comet bred from Llandinabo Onset (semen) who was gracing their paddocks in the 1960’s.

Onset was calved in 1965 and represents some of the earliest genetics at Llandinabo. His sire Llandinabo Mendel was by Sarn Oykel and his dam Llandinabo Cherry 4th was by Hardwicke Republic. We now have twelve calves by Onset and the majority of our Herd of twenty plus females are in calf to Llandinabo Zest with calving dates from April 2006.
